Applications of ZS Genetics Technology

The ZS Genetics technology platform offers the ability to take direct images of genetic material smaller than 1 Ångström (or Å, a tenth of a nanometer) by labeling it with one or a few atoms. This platform has the potential to be used in a number of different applications in genetic analysis. These systems have high throughput and low operating costs.

Sequencing
We plan to sequence DNA by taking digital images of labeled DNA bases with a high-resolution electron microscope. A sequence thousands of base-pairs long can be read directly from the image with normal pattern recognition software. By the latter half of 2008, the system is expected to read complete a haploid human genome in approximately 8 days, with 4X coverage, at a cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. The path to the $1,000 Genome will then be in sight.

Expression
Our technology will perform Expression by imaging samples on microarrays with a electron microscope. The RNA transcripts are individually visible and are counted directly. No amplification or use of fluorescence is required. The system is expected to have single molecule sensitivity and measure hundreds to thousands of genes from samples as small as a single cell.

Diagnostics
As part of our long term plans, ZSG is now developing procedures and techniques to support highly sensitive, non-invasive, genetic diagnostic assays. We are open to discussions with established diagnostics companies and research institutions about accelerating these plans.
